With less than 24 hours before the Delhi Assembly elections, a police case has been registered against Chief Minister Atishi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, who is contesting from the Kalkaji constituency, has been named in a disobedience case at the Govindpuri police station. The case, filed under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, stems from allegations that Atishi and her supporters refused to vacate Fateh Singh Marg despite being instructed to do so by the police, citing poll code guidelines. The incident occurred during her election campaign in Govindpuri.
The police’s version of the events suggests that Atishi was surrounded by 50-70 people and 10 vehicles, which was in violation of the guidelines. Tensions escalated when a supporter of Atishi allegedly slapped a cop filming her convoy. Atishi, however, responded sharply to the police action, accusing Ramesh Bidhuri, the BJP candidate from Kalkaji, of openly violating the poll code without facing any consequences. She questioned the credibility of the Election Commission, alleging biased enforcement of the model code of conduct.
AAP’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, also weighed in on the controversy, accusing the Delhi Police and Election Commission of backing the BJP's alleged unlawful activities. He claimed that the BJP was using illegal tactics such as distributing liquor and money, and anyone attempting to stop them was being targeted under obstructing work charges. The police sources have clarified that canvassing had officially ended when Atishi was campaigning in Govindpuri and that she allegedly argued with the executive magistrate leading the flying squad, a team responsible for enforcing election regulations.
