Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed cases against former leader Sheikh Hasina and her family members, including British minister Tulip Siddiq and World Health Organization (WHO) official Saima Wazed, in connection with an alleged large-scale land grab. The cases, filed on Monday, accuse Hasina and some government officials of illegally allocating lucrative plots in Dhaka's suburbs for personal gain.
Sheikh Hasina, who fled Bangladesh in August 2024 and took refuge in India, is facing charges of mass murder and other crimes in Bangladesh. The newly filed cases focus on her family's involvement in a controversial land deal, with allegations that plots were allocated to herself, her children, and extended family members. The ACC's director general, Akhter Hossain, confirmed that sufficient evidence has been gathered, and further investigations will reveal more details about property acquisitions.
The case also implicates Hasina's niece, British anti-corruption minister Tulip Siddiq, and her mother Sheikh Rehana, Hasina's sister. Siddiq has denied any wrongdoing, and this month, she referred herself to the British Prime Minister’s standards adviser following media reports about her living in properties linked to Hasina's administration.
Additionally, the ACC launched a probe in December into the alleged embezzlement of $5 billion by Hasina's family tied to the Rooppur nuclear power plant project, funded by Russia with a $12.65 billion loan. The corruption allegations center on kickbacks related to the Russian-funded project, which is one of Bangladesh's most significant infrastructure developments.
The ongoing investigations are set to include further revelations about property dealings and other potential embezzlement activities related to Sheikh Hasina and her family's financial dealings.
