Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMRL) has achieved a significant milestone by carrying 63.4 crore passengers in its seven years of operation, as announced by HMRL Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy. On the occasion of the metro's seventh anniversary, Reddy revealed that the state government is making rapid progress towards the development of Metro 2.0. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has pledged financial support for the expansion, with a 1.6 km stretch of the new route planned to be underground.
Addressing concerns about the 106 structures in the Old City affected by the expansion, Reddy assured that these would be tackled using scientific methods. The cost of land acquisition in the Old City is estimated to be around Rs. 700 crore. Additionally, the Chief Minister has directed that compensation for affected properties should be liberal.
In response to calls for more coaches, Reddy mentioned that future metro trains could be extended, as the existing platforms on Metro 1.0 are designed to accommodate longer trains. The upcoming Metro 2.0 will also offer more space for parking, bus bays, and feeder services, further improving the city's transportation network.
