The Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet set sail for Sudan on Friday, carrying over two tons of life-saving medicines, including anti-cancer drugs, as part of India’s ongoing humanitarian efforts. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the aid consignment, reinforcing India's commitment to providing relief in conflict-affected regions."Extending Humanitarian Assistance to the People of Sudan. An Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet departed today for Sudan, carrying a consignment of more than 2 tons of life-saving medicines, including anti-cancer drugs," the MEA stated.Earlier in the day, the Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet also departed for Djibouti, transporting medical aid including 20 haemodialysis machines and a reverse osmosis (RO) plant to support healthcare facilities in the region.
Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan
The Sudanese conflict, which began nearly two years ago, has devastated the region, with ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The humanitarian impact has been severe, leaving over 25 million people across Sudan, South Sudan, and Chad struggling with deteriorating food security.According to the World Food Programme (WFP), at least 17 million people in Sudan are at risk of starvation, with the conflict escalating into what could become the world’s largest hunger crisis. The delivery of essential medical supplies by India aims to alleviate some of the suffering caused by the ongoing turmoil.
India’s Recent Humanitarian Aid Initiatives
India has been actively engaged in providing disaster relief and medical assistance across the globe. In February 2025, India dispatched 26 tons of humanitarian aid to Honduras following Tropical Storm SARA. This consignment included:
Surgical supplies
Glucometers and oximeters
Gloves, syringes, and IV fluids
Blankets and sleeping mats
Hygiene kits
Similarly, on January 27, 2025, India sent humanitarian aid to the Kurdistan region of Iraq, consisting of:
Bronchodilators
Inhalers
Ventilators
This aid was part of India’s broader initiative, Vishwabandhu Bharat, which emphasizes India's role in global humanitarian assistance.
India has a longstanding history of supporting Iraq during crises. In 2003, India pledged USD 20 million in response to the UN Secretary-General’s appeal to assist the Iraqi people. The recent aid missions reinforce India’s commitment to global stability and humanitarian outreach.
India’s Growing Role in Global Humanitarian Efforts
India’s rapid response to international crises highlights its role as a key global humanitarian partner. Through timely medical aid, disaster relief, and infrastructure support, India continues to extend its assistance to nations facing natural disasters, conflicts, and health crises. As the situation in Sudan worsens, India's latest shipment of medical supplies is expected to provide critical support to healthcare facilities and displaced individuals. With ongoing aid missions across the world, India reaffirms its commitment to international cooperation and humanitarian leadership.
