India and China recently concluded a two-day foreign secretary-level meeting where several important decisions were made, marking a step toward stabilizing and rebuilding bilateral relations. The most significant outcome was the agreement to resume the Kailash-Mansarovar yatra during the summer, which has been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The resumption of this sacred pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar lake in Tibet is expected to ease tensions and foster people-to-people ties.
The meeting also saw an in-principle agreement to restart direct flights between India and China. Both countries' technical authorities will now meet to finalize the updated framework for these flights. Additionally, discussions were held on resuming cooperation regarding hydrological data and other issues concerning trans-border rivers, with an early meeting of the India-China Expert Level Mechanism planned.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's visit to Beijing was also marked by key diplomatic interactions. He met with high-ranking Chinese officials, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Liu Jianchao, the Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China. These meetings are part of the broader efforts between the two nations to stabilize their relationship, which has been fraught with challenges in recent years.
