The BCCI has announced an updated squad for India’s three-match ODI series against England, set to begin on Thursday. The major change includes the inclusion of Varun Chakaravarthy, who was a standout performer in the recent T20I series against England, taking 14 wickets, including a five-wicket haul. His exceptional performance earned him the title of "Player of the Series." However, a major omission is that of Jasprit Bumrah, who has been named only for the third ODI, with Harshit Rana still included for the first two matches. Bumrah’s fitness, after a back injury during the Border Gavaskar Trophy, will be assessed ahead of the Champions Trophy in 2025.
Chakaravarthy’s selection comes after an impressive performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he was the leading spinner with 18 wickets at an outstanding average of 12.16. Despite his limited List A experience, his record of 59 wickets in 23 games with a strike rate of 19.8 shows his ability to make an impact. His inclusion strengthens India's spin department, already featuring Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar. With the ODI series against England acting as a crucial preparation for the Champions Trophy, all eyes will be on Bumrah’s fitness and Chakaravarthy’s continued form.
