The festival around the full moon day of "Thai" (tamil month) with star "Poosam" at its highest point commemorates the occassion when mother Parvathi gave young Murugan a Vel "spear" to vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.
A unique aspect of Thai Poosam is the parade of devotees bearing kavadis as they humbly implore Lord Muruga for his blessings.
