New Orleans piano great Jon Cleary and his celebrated band, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, have been praised by Rolling Stone for their infectious combination of swinging keyboard melodies, moody 70s soul vocals, and spunky R&B rhythms.
Cleary was first brought to New Orleans and its storied Maple Leaf Bar in 1981 by his fascination with the funk-infused music of Allen Toussaint (who he later performed and recorded with). His mastery of the New Orleans piano style landed him gigs playing with local legends like Earl King, Snooks Eaglin, and many more. This launched a storied career that included a decade-long association with Bonnie Raitt and collaborations with Taj Mahal and John Scofield.
In 2016, Cleary released Go Go Juice to critical acclaim, which went on to earn him his first GRAMMY. His dizzying career has included on-stage performances and studio recordings with a veritable who’s who of the business: John Lee ***, Eric Clapton, Keb-Mo, Ryan Adams, Dr John, Brian May, Maria Muldaur, Ike Turner, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Irma Thomas… and the list goes on and on. In addition, Cleary has spent the last 20 years consistently winning New Orleans ‘Best Of” music awards by OffBeat and Gambit, the prestigious Ascona Jazz award, and “Best International Blues Act” by JazzFM.
