Laila – Latest Telugu Movie Review

Laila – Latest Telugu Movie Review

Plot Overview
Sonu Model (Vishwak Sen) is a popular makeup artist running a beauty parlour in Hyderabad’s Old City. His skills earn him a loyal clientele, and he becomes well-known in the neighborhood. In an attempt to help a customer and her family, he offers his name as a brand ambassador for their cooking oil business. However, this seemingly innocent gesture lands him in unforeseen trouble. As events spiral out of control, Sonu is forced to transform into ‘Laila.’ What led to this drastic change, and how does it impact his life? The rest of the film unfolds the story behind his transformation and its consequences.

Performances
Vishwak Sen makes a bold choice by donning a female getup for the second half. While his effort is commendable, the poorly written script limits his performance.
Akanksha Sharma, the female lead, focuses more on skin show than acting, delivering a lackluster performance.
Abhimanyu Singh gets a significant role and performs decently, generating occasional laughs.
Babloo Prithiveeraj & Vineet Kumar, playing a Chiranjeevi fan, are loud and annoying, failing to bring any meaningful humor.
Kamakshi Bhaskarla, as Abhimanyu Singh’s wife, delivers a decent performance but is underutilized.
Sunishith, the social media sensation, plays himself, but his character’s comedy falls flat.
Prudhviraj, known for his comedic timing, fails to leave an impact due to weak writing.
Technical Aspects
Direction: Ram Narayan fails to deliver an engaging narrative, making the film a disjointed collection of outdated humor and lackluster sequences.
Writing: The script by Vasudeva Murthy is one of the biggest drawbacks, filled with repetitive and below-the-belt humor that fails to entertain.
Music: Leon James, known for delivering hits with Vishwak Sen in the past, disappoints here. Only Icchukundam Baby stands out, while the rest of the soundtrack is forgettable.
Cinematography: Richard Prasad’s visuals are decent, but they don’t elevate the film beyond its weak storytelling.
Editing: Sagar Dadi does a passable job, but the film’s pacing is slow, making the experience even more tiresome.
Production Values: Shine Screens has invested in building a realistic Old City set, and the production quality is decent, but it doesn't save the film.

Positives
✅ A couple of comedy sequences land well.
✅ The production values are decent.

Negatives
❌ Outdated and uninspired writing.
❌ Overuse of double entendres and below-the-belt humor.
❌ Poorly written lead actress role.
❌ Weak storyline with no emotional depth.
❌ Forgettable songs and background score.

Analysis
Vishwak Sen, once seen as a promising actor with unique film choices (HIT: The First Case, Ashoka Vanamlo Arjuna Kalyanam), has seemingly lost direction in an attempt to establish himself as a ‘Mass Hero.’ Laila continues his streak of poor script choices, delivering an outdated and cringeworthy attempt at comedy.

The film struggles with its tone right from the start, relying on forced humor and an over-the-top portrayal of Old City slang rather than a solid narrative. The romantic track between Vishwak Sen and Akanksha Sharma is poorly developed, with her role serving no purpose other than glamour.

Despite having experienced actors, none of them make a lasting impact due to the weak writing. The second half, featuring Sonu’s transformation into Laila, could have been an opportunity for a refreshing narrative, but instead, it turns into an overdose of cringe-inducing humor and distasteful jokes.

With an excessive number of unnecessary songs and action sequences, the film feels more like a random collection of scenes than a cohesive story. Even the attempted Old City humor fails to land, making the experience frustrating.

Overall, Laila is yet another misstep in Vishwak Sen’s career. The lack of originality, weak direction, and forced comedy make it an exhausting watch. Unless you have absolutely nothing else to do, this one is best skipped.

Rating: ⭐⭐ (1.75/5)
