Nikhil's latest theatrical outing, Spy hit the theaters today amidst good anticipation. The film is vaguely based on the mysterious death of Netaji Subhash Chadrabose. Let us see what the film has to offer.
Story: Jai(Nikhil) is a spy who is operating in Sri Lanka. He is an Indian RAW agent who suffered a personal loss due to a terrorist named Kaadir Khan. After a series of incidents, Jai is asked to go after Kaadir. Can he nab the dreaded terrorist?
How did the actors perform?
Nikhil is good in the role of an earnest spy. He has the right demeanor for the role and he emotes well. Iswarya Menon as his love deviation is a fine find. She has decent looks. The rest of the cast deliver decent performances.
What about the technical finesse?
The director Garry Bh is an established editor who had worked on many films in the past. He is making his directorial debut with this film and he does an okayish job at it. He needed better grip on scripting though.
The BGM is okayish and so are the songs. The cinematography is good and the visual optic catches the eye from the very start.
Analysis:
Films like Spy which are promoted as action thrillers need a riveting screenplay from the start if they are to hold the attention of the viewers. Pacy narration is the key here. But this film stutters on both counts.
The narration is dragged on from the opening exchanges and that doesn't help the cause one bit. The opening half is about alright thanks to a couple of interesting sequences. But things go bad in the second half.
The Netaji disappearance track needed more care in handling. It caters to the masses and has the desired impetus but better blending was needed to make it suit the narrative of the film.
The climax portion looks rushed but that is mostly due to the undercooked pre climax portion. More comprehensive narration was needed here.
Verdict:
Spy is a middling action thriller that has an interesting real-life concept but the presentation and narrative arent quite as compelling. It can make for a okayish one-time watch at best.
